about the event
Remembering the Kamandama Mine Disaster
On June 6, 1972, a massive underground explosion rocked the Wankie (now Hwange) Colliery Company's Number 2 Mine, claiming the lives of 427 miners in one of the most tragic mining disasters in African history. The Kamandama Memorial Marathon was established to honor the memory of these brave miners, celebrate the resilience of the mining community, and promote health and safety in the mining industry. This event brings together runners, mining professionals, families, and communities to remember the past while looking toward a safer future for all miners. The route features a mix of terrains, with moderate elevation changes that provide both challenging and beautiful vistas of the surrounding landscape. Water points are spaced every 3 to 3.5 km along the route. There are toilets at every Water Point. For your safety, there will be two medical stations: one located at the start/finish area and another positioned halfway around the course. Additionally, two roaming ambulances will be on standby to provide assistance through out the event.
